Clomid questions

So we are about to start trying for #2 and the doctor I had with my son has since moved so we are now seeing a different doctor at the same practice. Well my original doctor ordered clomid for me and told me which days to take it and if I didn't get my period or a positive test to call her but if I had my period then just try again the next month. She put me on 50mg and gave me a 3 month supply. We tried it for two months and the third month decided we needed a break from trying, didn't take the clomid, and get our BFP hence our son!

Ok round two, the new doctor is doing it way differently, and I don't think I'm a fan lol she has me do blood work days 3 and 9 take 100mg clomid days 5-9, then start taking ovulation tests days 12 and on, once I get a positive I have to immediately come in for an ultrasound to see what the follicles are doing and how many are getting ready to release, then we try to get pregnant and if I get a positive they do blood work and an early ultrasound, if I don't get a positive then we up the clomid and do it all again!

Are both of these clomid protocols pretty typical? Is the new protocol a bit excessive? Round one I wanted my doctor to do that and she wouldn't and now I kinda just want the space and my doctor won't allow it. Does insurance usually cover this stuff?
