So, how bad it is to take Metformin inconsistently?

Sooo, I am not very diligent about taking my Metformin twice a day. Often it's because I have to go somewhere and I am worried about GI effects, or because I am not sure I am eating enough food with it, etc. (I'm aware that skipping a dose only prolongs the adjustment and the side effects.) They are huge pills that are hard to swallow. And I am not really sure what it does for me. I'm considered an atypical PCOS case, so losing weight was not a major goal. I've lost about 10 lbs on it, but I don't know if that's because it does something useful for my blood sugar or because of the lack of appetite/ diarrhea at first. As far as I can tell Metformin by itself doesn't make me ovulate, although I haven't had to take Provera to end a cycle since I started taking it. Not sure if that's coincidence or not, since it's not like I needed Provera every month before.

Since Femara is doing the important part -- making me O like a champ -- I am tempted to think that occasionally skipping a Metformin pill doesn't matter much. But I've also read that Metformin in the first trimester can reduce the chances of miscarriage, which are higher than average with PCOS as it is. So that would be a major reason to take it diligently (not that I am pregnant yet, as far as I know...) I'm wondering what you all think. How important is it for me to commit to the full dose every day no matter what?
