Within the last 2 years I have been diagnosed with PCOS, though I’m sure I’ve had it since puberty and different aspects of PCOS started to tack on one by one over the years. I don’t have much of an issue with period regularity, I’ve been pretty consistently been on birth control since I was 18, with only being off for a couple years (I’m 31 now). In my 20’s is when I started to notice the hirsutism. It started with a couple thick hairs on my chin, usually one or two at a time that I would just pluck and not think much about. Then I started growing dark hairs on my nipples, stomach, chest, back, chin, and occasionally side burns. I suffer plucking daily, and never leaving my house without tweezers because I can pluck about 10-15 hairs from my chin alone every day. I finally told my Dr about this problem and she had me get a scan done to reveal I did have PCOS and this was hirsutism I was suffering from. She prescribed me Ortho Tri Cyclin Lo. After taking this in the past I didn’t have any major issues with it, it started to make me go emotionally out of wack so I quit taking it and moved to a different brand, so this time I gave it another try. After a few months of taking it, I realized that it was giving me really bad nausea, so my Dr switched me to Azurette (which I believe was because the estrogen in Ortho Tri Cyclin was too high?) Azurette has been amazing!! But I went back to my Dr because it wasn’t making a dent in the excess hair growth so she prescribed me Metformin 500mg three times a day. After taking that for a few months I realized it was giving me these debilitating headaches (like ruin your whole day kind of headaches, almost migraine). So yesterday she switched me to Spironolactone 50 mg twice a day. I’m afraid that this isn’t going to work either and I’ll be stuck with this hirsutism my whole life, and feeling unattractive and fearful. Has anyone had any success with Spironolactone? If you have hirsutism along side PCOS, how do you manage it?
